The SN Marbles buying guide
Compare the stone.
Then compare the quote.
Before choosing between two stone quotes, make sure they describe comparable material and the same commercial scope. Use this checklist in your supplier conversation.
Keep these details with the quotation
01 / Identify what is being offered.
Record the trade name, lot or bundle reference, photo date and proposed quantity. Ask which images show the actual material and which are examples. If appearance is important, review several slabs or arrange an inspection.
02 / Write down thickness, finish and grade.
Specify thickness in millimetres and ask how it is measured. Include the surface finish and an explanation of the grade. Identify visible features that are acceptable or unacceptable for your intended use rather than relying only on a broad grade name.
03 / Separate billing size from usable size.
Ask whether quoted measurements are gross, net or based on another agreed deduction. Your fabricator needs usable dimensions to estimate cutting yield. Do not compare two rates per square foot without comparing their measurement basis.
Rectangular area check
Use inches to calculate geometric square feet. This does not estimate usable yield or set the billing measurement.
04 / Compare the total scope.
| Quote detail | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Material | Which lot, quantity, unit and rate does this cover? |
| Processing | What cutting, polishing or other processing is included? |
| Loading and packing | Who arranges it, and is it charged separately? |
| Taxes and freight | Are they included, estimated or to be confirmed? |
| Payment and dispatch | What are the written payment terms and dispatch conditions? |
05 / Agree the handover.
Confirm the material reference, quantity record, packing or loading scope, transporter arrangements and receiving process before dispatch. Discuss how discrepancies or damage would be recorded and handled. Keep the agreement with the order.
Buyer guidance
Questions worth asking.
How do I calculate rectangular area from inches?
Multiply length in inches by width in inches, then divide by 144 to obtain square feet. This is geometric area; billing deductions and usable cutting area still need agreement.
Does the lowest square-foot rate mean the lowest cost?
Not necessarily. Differences in measurement, usable yield, processing and delivery can change the total cost. Compare the same scope.
Does this checklist replace an inspection?
No. It helps organise your enquiry and records. Material suitability and acceptance still depend on the actual lot and the requirements of your application.
